July 21, 2015 Questions to the EU Commission

Picula requested help because of the wildfire on the Croatian coast

Due to the unprecedented wildfires that mostly hit the island of Korcula and Peljesac Peninsula these days, member of the European Parliament Tonino Picula asked the European Commission to send emergency equipment.

"In addition to the possible mobilization of solidarity fund, are you planning to send emergency equipment and funds for defence against fire in order to help not only with rehabilitation but also in the fight against this natural disaster?" -  Picula asked the European Commission.

"As the Vice President of the Intergroup for Islands, Seas, Rivers and Coastal areas, I have decided to send a priority question to the Commission. The situation on the ground is dramatic, firefighters cannot guarantee for houses and the fire, despite all supperhuman fforts and all the capacity they're using, still isn't under control.

So far more than 850 hectares have burned down on the island of Korčula, while two kilometres of forest are burning on Pelješac. Despite superhuman efforts and the use of all available resources, neither fire is yet under control. The heatwave of extremely high temperatures and the droughts in no way contribute to an improvement of the situation. Electricity and phone lines are down", Picula wrote in his question.
