March 7, 2016 Questions to the EU Commission

Picula asked the Commission regarding the waste issue in the Adriatic

Because of marine waste on the beach in Trstenik on the peninsula Pelješac, that comes from neighboring Montenegro and Albania and numerous e-mails he received from concerned citizens, MEP Tonino Picula asked the European Commission: "What general steps is the Commission taking to reduce the problem of marine waste and to achieve the objective of restoring the good ecological status of all marine waters by 2020?".

In his one minute speech at the plenary session in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Picula warned that in the last 100 years waste production has increased by a factor of 10, and the world looks set to produce twice as much waste in 2025 as it does now.

"A significant proportion of the waste produced ends up in the sea, where it poses a serious threat to the marine ecosystem, the environment and health. Marine waste is exclusively the result of human activities, mainly inland (some 80%) and to a lesser extent at sea (20%). Marine waste does not recognise borders. It is a constant problem that spreads far beyond borders and the source of pollution" he said.
