Decisions on islands have been made from the coast for too long

MEP Tonino Picula organized a conference about islands in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Guests were young islanders, representatives of our coastal region that Picula hosted as a Vice President of the Intergroup for seas, rivers, islands and coastal areas.

"I come from the youngest EU member: Croatia, a country with 78 islands, 524 small islands and islets, rocks and 642 ridges-a total of 1244 of which only 59 are inhabited, said MEP Tonino Picula, opening the Conference "Islands in cohesion policy-how to take into account the specific characteristics of the island?" that he organized in Strasbourg.

Islanders from 9 countries: Great Britain, Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Malta, Cyprus, Croatia and Greece from Intergroup for the sea, rivers, Islands and coastal areas, representatives of the CPMR (Conference of peripheral maritime regions) and thirty young Islanders, representatives of five of our coastal region who he hosted in Strasbourg as the Vice Chair of Intergroup, participated the conference.

"As a MEP who comes from the sea, I am especially happy that Croatia has over 8 billion euros at disposal in the Cohesion Fund in the period up to 2020. In addition, from 2015, Croatian Government introduced a special subprogram "Development of Islands". If you add that number to a billion and a half of the funds from the European Social Fund, that is very good news for the great Adriatic archipelago with over a thousand islands, islets and rocks", Picula said.
