Picula told the reporters on the central Osijek square Ante Starcevic that the European project deserved support, because the EU since the mid-1950s provided "an unprecedented long period of peace and cooperation among different European countries and traditions, that never happened before in the European history".
He points out that citizens' voice in these elections will help to better determine direction of EU development in the first half of the 21st century, and the EU to revitalize in order to be at the level of expectations of citizens who are facing serious problems in the coming years.
Picula also says that EU elections are particularly important for Croatian citizens, because "our country was the last one entering the EU and we have had the least opportunity to use the EU tools to improve our own standards and realize our national goals."
"In the past six years the EU has changed, but so did Croatia. We are richer for one experience and we can assess where the deficit needs to be corrected, because we did not take advantage of all the opportunities that we had at our disposal, but we cannot stand aside and just watch in which directon will EU develop", said Picula.
