As one of the founders of the European Parliament's Intergroup for Seas, Rivers, Islands and Coastal Areas in which he is the Vice president in charge of the islands, Picula is following preparatory work of the new Act on Islands as well as the establishment of a special Island Management, which has been operating within the Ministry since two months. MEP Picula informed the Minister about the latest European legislative and policy initiatives related to the islands and welcomed the efforts of the Ministry for more effective management of the development of our islands.
Minister Žalac and MEP Picula agreed that Croatia has many opportunities to use European experiences and funds for the islands, and that Croatian experience in managing island development can be very useful to the creators of the European island policy. Both of them pointed out that islands and Adriatic Croatia are one of the topics that Croatia can put on the agenda of its EU Presidency in 2020 to be affirmed as one of the leaders of the island's development in the Union
