Picula's main priority is to include geographically disadvantaged areas into European policies. This is why in 2016 he proposed a preparatory action plan that ensured 2 million EUR from EU budget and resulted in the ‘Clean Energy for EU islands Initiative’. Through this initiative an Island secretariat has been established and over 40 islands communities have been included in the process of clean energy transition. MEP Picula ensured an additional 1 million EUR from 2020 EU budget to continue these activities. Grand recognition of this work and for the initiative was its inclusion in the European Green Deal communication.
