"I am extremely honored with this nomination because it is a great tribute to many years of my work. But, above all, it is a tribute to the European islanders who have recognized the energy transition as a priority and made my initiative successful! I look forward to continuing my work on the energy transition of islands who already serve as one of the road signs in Europe's most important project for the decades ahead, the European Green Plan", said MEP Picula up on the nomination.
Picula's main priority is to include geographically disadvantaged areas into European policies. This is why in 2016 he proposed a preparatory action plan that ensured 2 million EUR from EU budget and resulted in the ‘Clean Energy for EU islands Initiative’. Through this initiative an Island secretariat has been established and over 40 islands communities have been included in the process of clean energy transition. MEP Picula ensured an additional 1 million EUR from 2020 EU budget to continue these activities. Grand recognition of this work and for the initiative was its inclusion in the European Green Deal communication.
