Only EU enlargement brings stability to the Balkans

The EU should export stability to the Western Balkans in order not to import instability, says MEP Tonino Picula.

Tonino Picula, President of the European Parliament's working group for the Western Balkans and European Parliament rapporteur for relations with Montenegro, considers extremely important that the new President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, put openness towards Western Balkans in her priorities. Also, he counts on the support of High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security PolicyJosep Borrell. Picula, Croatian MEP, was also named European Parliament rapporteur for recommendations on the Western Balkans, on Wednesday. His role will be to draft Parliament's recommendations to the Council and the Commission with a goal to open pre-accession negotiations with Northern Macedonia and Albania and giving new impetus to the enlargement process.

In an interview for Al Jazeera, Picula also expressed his views on other topics, including his view of national politics that dominate the Western Balkan countries.
