Montenegro continues its path towards the EU

As for Montenegro and its path to the European Union, no balance clause has been activated, Tonino Picula, European Parliament rapporteur for Montenegro, said in an interview with NOVA M.

According to our country, the reforms are expected to continue, and the European Union is expected to reconsider and correct its decisions, such as not opening negotiations with Skopje and Tirana on the first occasion. Blocking the enlargement process is a wrong decision by the EU and it is unacceptable for some countries to use the veto power as a tool to address domestic political situations, Montenegro's EP rapporteur Tonino Picula told to NOVA M TV. He added that the European Council should assume responsibility and act in accordance with its own obligations, and that he expects that it should be rectified if not on the first occasion, then during the Croatian Presidency in the first half of next year.

"Well, it would be a real pity to stop any good negotiation process that is characteristic for Montenegro in any way. I think Montenegro has done a good job, it has made a lot of progress", Picula said.

Picula was also asked if the situation with the negotiations with Montenegro had changed since some of the public claims that the balance clause had been activated informally. Picula categorically rejects such claims: "As far as Montenegro is concerned, no balance clause or blocking of the opening of new chapters has been activated. Montenegro is certainly expected to continue reforms, especially in areas where there is a lack of progress in the EC annual report. Commission President Jean Claude Juncker and other European leaders have emphasied so many times, and I agree, that the path to EU membership is individual", the rapporteur said
