Everyone in Montenegro should have the EU as a goal

In an interview for Radio Free Europe (RSE), MEP Tonino Picula said that he would immediately get to the heart of the problem in Montenegro, talking to all actors on the political and public scene.

RSE: The fact that Montenegro is the most advanced in the negotiations with the EU does not diminish the enormous problem it has with Chapters 23 and 24. Attacks on journalists are not illuminated, there are numerous affairs that question the integrity of the Montenegrin judiciary, distrust of the electoral process is almost insurmountable… What can be your impact on improving some key things in Montenegro?

Picula: First of all, I hope to have a good cooperation with everyone on the Montenegrin political scene, who can influence the change in the situation you just described. In doing so, the biggest responsibility lies primarily with the authorities and that is government and parliament, from the position of the majority. But other actors, whether they are political opposition or those who are not organized as political parties, in the form of non-governmental organizations and other associations that create one kind of attitude towards this goal (EU), have the same responsibility for completing the Montenegrin path to EU membership which, I hope, connects political factors in Montenegro, regardless of views and ideas on how to resolve the kind of blockade or polarization that is characterized by political life in Montenegro. My personal experience, not only from Croatia but also from working with candidates and potential EU candidate countries, is such that I will endeavor and have the opportunity to immediately get to the heart of the problem by talking to everyone. It won't take a lot of time to get into the core of problems because they are more less familiar to me. But I hope that in one dialog form, we will go a step further.
