EU will fund a part of island's needs

Residents of the European islands could finally have the same conditions in the future as residents on the land! 15 million people that have been neglected, or at least not so much listened to in the EU, can count on the fact that a part of their needs will be funded by European institutions in the next mandate, says MEP Tonino Picula.

In the Grand Council of the City of Zadar, MEP and Vice-president of the European Parliament's Intergroup in charge of the islands Tonino Picula, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Regional Development and EU Funds Tajana Huzak, representatives of the Ministry of Environment and Energy and Wioletta Dunin-Majewska and Feilim O'Connor from the European Commission DG Energy, met on Thursday with the heads of Zadar, Šibenik, Split and Dubrovnik county, the mayors of Preko, Kali, Tkon, Sali and the heads of the Croatian Islands Parliament.

The woking visit was followed by establishing the Secretariat for the Islands within the European Commission 2 weeks ago, which was inaugurated by the amendment of MEP Tonino Picula, and is the first working body in the history of the European Union exclusively available to the islanders. It has been set up within the European Commission and in the next two years the task is to directly assist the islands in developing transition plans for renewable energy sources, as well as helping them find financial resources and improving living conditions.
