Croatian islands on their way to clean energy

Through my Action Plan, I have secured another two million euros to help the islands transition to renewable energy

The project goes on. The agreement between the European Council and the European Parliament on the budget for 2020 has secured, through the action plan, another EUR 2 million for technical assistance to the islands, for applications to European renewable energy projects in the next two years - confirmed Croatian MEP Tonino Picula. He is pleased that gathered almost 200 participants at the 4th Island Forum for Clean Energy in the EU Islands, organized for the first time in Croatia.

"This is a process that started three years ago when, with my colleague from Malta, I filedan amendment to the annual budget of the European Union, to provide funds for energy transition in the islands and to switch to electricity generation from clean sources and ensure decarbonisation in time. The European Commission responded admirably, and that year adopted the "Clean Energy for All Europeans" pacakage, but with a special focus on those who are geographically, socially, economically disadvantaged, and those are islanders who haven't been in European policies by now", said MEP Picula, who is extremely pleased with the fact that among 26 European island communities involved in the process of transition to clean sources and forms of energy, 10 are Croatian. These are 7 islands of the Cres-Lošinj archipelago (Cres, Ilovik, Lošinj, Male Srakane, Susak, Union and Velike Srakane) and Brač, Hvar and Korčula.
